Horse training tips: Training in the wind

June 18, 2016   //   Horse Riding, Training Tips

This all sounds super simple but it might be stuff you need to be reminded of every now and again:

Training outside in adverse weather can sometimes be nerve racking if you are not a confident rider or if your horse is still in need of a lot of training.  The wind can sometimes add an element of “fun” to your horse training time and may put your horse on edge.

What do you do to push through the fact that your horse seems spooked by the wind?

The simplest answer is to remain calm and confident.  As you remain calm, confident, and unafraid, your horse will start to pick up on the fact that the wind, and all the rustling that the wind brings, is not a big deal.  Then they will start to focus on what you are trying to teach them.  Other practical ideas are just to warm them up longer.

The longer you go in your workout session, the more your horse will forget about the elements around them.
